I remember seeing “Boys in the Sand” at this theater. It was the first main stream male porn film,and was highly advertised in local papers.Because it did very well at the boxoffice, many other male films soon followed.
I saw the film with my parents at the Criterion in New York City.I was a thrill watching it in Todd-AO, along with great sterophonic sound.I thought then and still do that the use of color tint during the musical number was distracting. I loved the film and have seen it many times later. I also remember it being transferred over to the Rivoli after the Criterion run. I don’t recall how long it played there.
When I moved to Brooklyn, the only legit film I ever saw there was Cold Turkey. Shortly after that the theatre turned to porn. Being divorced, porn was a good release for me.This was the days way before computers. The theatre rapily became a home for straight, Bi and gay men.Sex acts were openly performed in the seats, back or bathrooms.It got to a point where the candy counter was removed and a mini theater was put up showing only gay porn loops. So you had straight and gay films running all the time. A table was put between where free coffee was served.I surprise the theatre stayed open for as long as it did without the cops closing it down. Somebody was being paid off.
