I worked at the Regent theater in the early 70’s for a brief time I remember one odd fact. The marquee was cantilever with the projection booth so if a truck drove past out front at speed the booth would move up and down ever so slightly but on screen you could see the effect. One of the projectionists at the time told me that in the late 1800’s a stable was at that location.
The last few rows in the center were removed for the Sensuround with the movie midway the count may have been durring the removal. I do not remember if they were replaced or not. It was just to long ago.
Any one remember the Midnight Shows “Pink Flamingos” in particular? I was the Manager of Pequa at that time. On one particular Midnight show (I think it was a Friday) the police showed up went through the theater looking for under age customers. They confiscated the film. I had to go befor a grand jury in mineola. The whole thing was dismissed but a wierd deal to say the least. Does anyone remember the circular staircase to the projection booth?
I was also a manager for a short time at this theater. Trying to remember the year may have been in the 60’s. I recall at the time I was there having to manage this and the Rivoli at the same time…
Red Carpet was the type of run of film. Red Capet was a first run theater and would get the shows first. There were at somtime in the theaters history live shows there as going through the dressing rooms I found advertizing materials from several shows. I was (am though now retired) an old fashion theater manager and would always show schedule a cartoon with a movie even with Fanny Hill which we did show at the Fantasy.
I often wonder what became of the staff ushers cashiers projectionists etc. Richard Papazian the head usher at the time outside controling the lines with an Armanian accent. The head quarters of Century Theaters had a teak staircase that no one was to use for fear of it getting damaged.
Hello all I was the Manager at the Fantasy when with lines down the street we ran Funny Girl “Red Carpet” The head usher Richard P. the Cashier Bertha H. who lived in an apartment accross the street.
This theater did have dressing rooms in the back and a beautiful terrazo floor in the lobby. I managed many theaters in my career this was the most beautiful of them all. This theater had a personality
Say JimC just in case my email is Do you remember Maurene Fullam? George? The assistant manager for a short while Rhonda? The police car that landed in the emergency exit? There is so much more. So many stories attached to this theater. All happy memories all good times. We won UA’s award for the best maintained and improved theater in the circuit while I was there, distributed the prize money with the whole (theater) family.. Are there any other family members out there? It would be cool to have a reunion know where we all moved on to… I live in Virginia now just outside Charlottesville. Write soon!
Hey Jim getting old now 61 but did we work it at the same time? Tom Kelly I was the Manager about that it was a family theater in the truest sense. The staff of the theater came to my home when my son Robert was born. Everyone worked together. I remember one night the inevitable happened the movie on screen upside down. Hey we had the best lenses and focus outside of Syosset. PS: Lets remember Harry our infamous doorman….
