Living in Murphysboro at the time, I am adamant that the book is in error, and the theatre was not torn down during the time I lived there. It stood until early 1969. Although closed since early 1968.
The name ‘Hippodrome’ was in the stone work at the top of the buidling. This theatre was awesome inside with scrollwork around the stage and statuary on two alcoves near the stage. The buidling stood until early 1969. It closed in 1968. I saw a movie there in April 1968 when I was twelve. This theatre is one of my two all time favorites. My all time fav being the Fox Theatre in Salina, Kansas, which, thankfully, still exists as a live house.
