Manager, Harry Metcalfe, Tommy Trinder, Jack Radcliffe and Norman Evans in 1951. The Metcalfe family also owned the Regal, which became the Essoldo, whilst the Empire became that company’s ‘second house’ in the town. Rank had wanted to buy the Regal but , upon being told that it came as part of a ‘job lot’ with the Empire, they declined. Also owned by the Metcalfes was the Hippodrome, Stockton and - I believe - the Cinema, Stockton, both of which also became part of the Essoldo circuit.
