Thought I made a comment here so here it goes….I saw 2 films at the “Gateway”, Priest & Love & Human Remains. A nice quaint theater, though a small draw of movie goers while I was there. Glad to see the the building stayed in tact and continues on to this day.

Just small cedy & sleazy is all I havta say D. Slack. Establishments like the Tea Room you do have to visit them because all u will find is outside exterior pics.

stevemcgarrett commented about Kam Drive-In on Apr 25, 2010 at 10:58 am

Lets see when the Drive Ins were still the place to go…..

Kam Drive In owned by Consolidated also operated Kailua Drive In

Royal Sunset which was in Waipahu/Kunia Area & Waialae was Royal Theaters

stevemcgarrett commented about Marina Twins on Apr 25, 2010 at 10:51 am

Oh yes I can’t forget the Marina Twins while then under ownership of the Royal Chain. As A Kid I always checked to see what was playing there back in the 70’s. The first movie that I saw there was Raiders of The Lost Ark. And other movies seen there, Grease 2, Terms of Endearment & Falcon & The Snowman, Four Weddings & A Funeral and few others I may have forgotten. The theater itself seems quite small, the lobby area, snack bar facility seems teeny tiny & the theaters on both side were designed differently. Theater 1 is the typical theater shaped auditorium vs. #2 was slightly a rectangle shaped-ish that was different from the other one. And yes when Royal Theater Chain went poof, Consolidated took over which eventually became Outback as I recall while living on the islands.

stevemcgarrett commented about Restaurant Row 9 Theatre on Apr 25, 2010 at 10:23 am

I just read on another site that this place I once went to is no more. Competition and business on the island is fierce and I guess w/ the cost of going to one now vs. waiting till it hits DVD & the innovation of Blu-Rays not even extreme lower priced tickets which this location lastly resorted to eventually sank. As I was thee first to comment I am gonna leave my mark saying that yes I enjoyed goin to this theatre when it was the hot spot to head to then while I was on the islands.

stevemcgarrett commented about King Theatre on Nov 3, 2009 at 5:05 pm

First movie I saw back in 1977 was “Tentacles” as a single screen theater. Got Twinned in the 80’s when it was owned by Royal. Oddly shaped theater and the snack food area was teeny tiny. I recall the lady behind the snack food counter would yell at you suggesting that you are trying to sneak into the adjoining theater that you did not pay for but was on your way to use the bathroom. The theater auditoriums were poorly lit. The movies ranged from Disney flicks to Sci Fi Horror flicks, “Scanners Anyone?”… During its final days Consolidated featured 3rd rate showings of double features for a low price that did draw a handful of people but theater eventually closed up and torn down and converted into a parking lot garage.

stevemcgarrett commented about Hawaii Cinerama on Feb 12, 2007 at 7:58 pm

Paramount was still exclusive to ROYAL before it switched over to Consolidated during the 80’s. In case of Raiders it was still doin its showing thru the Royal Chain.
BTW, Raiders made its US realease in theaters in June of 1981 so it was ROYAL that was screening the film on its first run. I saw this with my mom at The Marina theater #2 during its second run. The crowd wasn’t that big as I recall from the dinky sized auditorium.
The Parmount Movie that became Consolidated’s first film to screen at their theaters was FLASHDANCE at the PEARLRIDGE 4 PLEX.

stevemcgarrett commented about The Wonderful Art of Seat Saving on Dec 5, 2006 at 7:10 pm

My thoughts on Savings Seats is if you got there EARLY, snooze you lose! If you had to step away to the concession stand, use the bathroom, whatever make it snappy and get your behinds back into the seats before the movie starts.
But then again if you got there late you are pretty much have to make do with whats left. I have seen many MANY times when ppl are endlessly looking for those ideal seats. And I HATE accomodating for others so that so and so can sit together.

stevemcgarrett commented about Century San Francisco Centre 9 on Oct 5, 2006 at 3:41 am

I have yet to visit this place yet but I did read that the place went DARK just the other day. And Bloomingdales which is in the complex was the only with lights on.
Also I hear the chairs there are L-E-A-T-H-E-R

stevemcgarrett commented about Pearl Highlands 12 on Sep 25, 2006 at 8:39 pm

Well they used to be Signature btw…..
It’s odd that Oahu has what 3 theatre chains battling for your movie bucks?
I have been at this complex and its nice as I recall. Since I have mooooved to California I have no idea what its like now

stevemcgarrett commented about Now showing: Too much on Aug 30, 2006 at 2:37 am

I have not been at the Century 12 since I DON’T drive and I HATED the 1970’s style seats they have there. Unless they have got rid of them and put in more current up to date chairs…. I have not been back there since then. And yes each time I pass the theater on the highway I see the droves of cars that fills the parking lot.
As for the Century 20 that opened in RWC Downtown, it is a quaint looking multiplex.
Very acessible theater for those who don’t drive or rather not. You can walk right over after getting off of SamTrans or CalTrain. And the area its in is still building with new tentants opening monthly as we speak. Sooooo I think the Century 20 will be hanging around for a bit.

stevemcgarrett commented about AMC fires (then rehires) veteran ticket-taker with tattoos on May 23, 2006 at 10:58 pm

I am glad Mr. Smith got a positive outcome over this questionable incident. The guy is in his 80’s and when he got his tattoos then the markings and styles are goin to be waaaay waaaaay different versus the young'uns have on their skins now. It’s a shame that the folks over at that AMC Theater did not weigh the pros and cons before making a stupid move that in the end make themselves look like the fools. Depending on workers w/ tattoos it depends if their markings is not goin to offend anyone. Also, a workers performance IMO should be ranked #1 over Tattoo Markings.

stevemcgarrett commented about Kapahulu Theatre on May 13, 2006 at 8:14 pm

Hey Vito thanks for the recap. And yes Kapiolani was Consolidated ALL THE WAY until its very end.

stevemcgarrett commented about Kapahulu Theatre on May 12, 2006 at 11:01 pm

I also wanna add….
When is other long gone theaters like Kapiolani, King Twins , & Marina Twins gonna grace its presence?

stevemcgarrett commented about Kapahulu Theatre on May 12, 2006 at 10:58 pm

I was sooo fortunate to have gone to this ol theater back in the mid 70’s to see “The Drowning Pool” w/ my mom…..
Me thinks the theater folded was the location it was at…
And the popularity of Beta & VHS

stevemcgarrett commented about UA Galaxy on Apr 5, 2006 at 10:14 pm

I must have been under a rock when learning thru another site that the ol Galaxy quietly closed up for good.
An island boy from the 50th state I moved to SF in 1998 and the first movie that I saw at the Galaxy was “Dance With Me” though I already saw this movie back home in Hawaii. The Galaxy was a quaint 4 plex theater and I have watched a slew of flicks here, did a bunch of sneak preview showings which was eventually the last time I graced my presence in this establishment before the 4 plex decided to go arthouse. The movies Hollywood was putting out , the nearby AMC 1000 @ Van Ness, The Metreon & the revolution of DVD’s are a few things that took a toll on the ol Galaxy.

stevemcgarrett commented about Pearlridge Cinema I-II-III-IV on Mar 25, 2006 at 10:42 pm

The 4 plex was my hub of movie watching when I lived in the area as a teen. #3 was considered thee main one versus the other 3. I still remember the distinctive colors each theater had. #1 was BLUE, #2 RED, #3 YELLOW and #4 GREEN….. Lost count the rising prices of the tickets but I nevah complained. The opening of the megaplex in Phase II/Downtown was a mistake in the making. I think they should have done it over at the other end of Pearlridge IMO.

stevemcgarrett commented about Restaurant Row 9 Theatre on Mar 25, 2006 at 10:25 pm

I used to go to this place a lot. Catch whatever movie that was playin and head over to nearby Aloha Tower Marketplace ot trek down to Ala Moana Center. BTW, when are they gonna put one directly there? I may have been out of touch w/ the latest happenings since Ihave departed 1998.

stevemcgarrett commented about Hillsdale Cinema on Jun 4, 2005 at 12:21 am

Nope sorry Eric….
When I went back couple days after the exhibit was taken down… :(

stevemcgarrett commented about Hawaii's Waikiki Theatre Demolished on Apr 27, 2005 at 7:28 am

Very sad that the HISTORY of the theater itself could not be saved. I have many memories of the Waikiki Theater as a kid when I saw Earthquake to Close Encounters of The Third Kind w/ my mom then fast fowarding to the newly designed Waikiki 3 from Terminator 2 to Bad Boys in my teen years…

stevemcgarrett commented about Hillsdale Cinema on Feb 25, 2005 at 11:27 pm

I wanna add that its NOT a furniture store as stated above………
The site stood vacant for awhile and was converted into Organized Living a home improvement store that seels storage and what have nots…. I got to see old photos of what the Hillsdale Cinema was like when it was goin at a display Hillsdale Mall had up and I thought was kinda neat….

stevemcgarrett commented about Tea Room Theatre on Feb 18, 2005 at 8:29 am

well since being on this site I am SHOCKED that The Tearoom in SF made the list…..
Anyway Tearoom’s entrance is s storefront but when you do enter the main auditorium it is a relative medium sized screen surrounded by chairs…

stevemcgarrett commented about Embarcadero Center Cinema on Feb 3, 2005 at 11:52 am

I loooooove this place…..
I caught a few awesome flicks there!
The Cinema is surrounded in a great place to browse/shop or get a snack/bite to each before and after seeing a movie there….

stevemcgarrett commented about AMC Metreon 16 on Feb 3, 2005 at 11:49 am

I kinda miss the place…….
Auditoriums #11 # 12 is BIIIIIG!!!!!
I groaned if a movie I went to see was at #1’s – #4 seems teeny tiny
Went there almost every weekend but since I live down the Peninsula and theres already a 12 plex just up the street from where I live.

stevemcgarrett commented about Regency II on May 15, 2004 at 11:05 am

I have been here ummmm 2x’s (Simon Birch, Enemy of The State)…. The Regency did suffer big time w/ the neighboring UA Galaxy and AMC 1000 nearby.

As I remember you go up the escalator and at the top you curve right over to the box office counter area. The decor and auditorium looked nice. The ONLY thing I did not like was the CHAIRS. They constantly moved while I was sitting. Grrrrrr
