If you haven’t seen the website and signed their online petition then I would recommend you pay them a visit really interesting site with lots of original photos. The Newcastle Paramount is one of the most complete examples of the American studio’s all to brief foray into theatre ownership in the UK. Like the Ambassador Salford UK this theatre shares the same criminal fate of abandonment by English Heritage and the Department of Media Culture & Sport. Both organizations are hypocrites and should be replaced by a more publicly accountable body that really cares for ALL our heritage not just their snobby arty-farty bits!!!
The Mayfair Has been demolished and work has commenced on building yet more FLATS!!!!
A note to our American cousins – local government in the UK is funded largely though a local taxation called Council Tax which is levied on the basis of the value of domestic properties. Hence the almost obscene haste in which council’s grant planing permission for domestic property, particularly flats. Also new built properties are worth more in revenue.
As predicted the Langworthy is no more “wonderful Salford Council” doing what they do best destroying the past!!! It’s as if they are ashamed of Salford’s rich social and architectural heritage and they want to finish of what they started in the sixties. The last remaining great Cinema a few hundred yards up the at the top of Langworthy Road, the Ambassador ( http://www.ambassadorproject.homestead.com ) will probably meet the same fate if it’s left to these uninspired political philistines!!!
Do YOUR BIT TO SAVE SALFORD’S “GRAND OLD LADY” – THE AMBASSADOR Please help us to save the last remaining example of John' Knight’s Super Cinemas by adding your name to our online petition at View link
