The IMAX screen is 43'h x 70'w

While the showtime/tickets websites still refer to it as the Randall 16, Goodrich calls it the “Randall 15 IMAX”.

They’ve added D-Box motion seats to a theater.

The projectors are now all 4K Christie digitals. The image quality is much improved over the battered prints they used to run.

Went by today – I believe they’re 86’d. The web site & telephone # are gone.

Battle? The war ended 5-6 years ago. Why shake an auteur gloved fist at the studios? It was over when the global market for snapshots went digital – film for the motion picture industry was a small percent of product and revenue. The costs of manufacturing and processing motion picture film don’t work without those economies of scale.

The street view is correct, the Google push pin is in the wrong location.

On Google street view the actual plaza entrance shows at 1277 Liberty St. There is also signage for Entertainment Cinemas(Springfield Cinemas/Plaza 16) at this entrance, the lot feeder goes thru to St. James Ave.

Hollywood Boulevard Cinema LLC run by Ted Bulthaup. He had an eat ‘n’ view in Indianapolis called Hollywood Bar & Filmworks that went belly up in 2006.

The interior decor is modern American junk collection.

People can get a cheeseburger anywhere, ok? They come to Chotchkie’s for the atmosphere and the attitude. That’s what the flair’s about. It’s about fun.

New url for the Russell Phillips 1984 photo. Contrast with these current views posted by John Allen of High Performance Stereo. (HPS did the sound system). The after photos are a great tribute to the Johnson’s.

AIA lists it as one of the 150 great places of Illinois. They also have the design firm listed as Van Gunten & Van Gunten and claim it was the second theater anywhere purpose designed for sound films. Does anyone know the exhibitors history? The stagehand site claims it was a B & K until 1948.

It’s a great space. Without a riser or balcony there’s no way to reference the scale. The screen fills the entire area under the proscenium but you don’t get a sense of its size until you’ve walked two-thirds of the way down to the stage. Most exterior shots only show the entrance and marquee and not the business end. Gotta love that flyhouse.

I’d guess the government largess ended or they fulfilled all the attached terms and obligations.

Lawndale may have bottomed out but there’s no where near the disposable income to sustain a multiplex yet.

There has been enough development on the Near West Side to sustain a 6-10 screen house. Sundance Cinema was looking at a multiplex on Racine couple of years ago.

Blaming the demise on the sound system makes for a good urban legend. Muddled sound is the kind of issue that gets addressed if the property is a cash cow and ignored if it’s a marginal performer.

Sure in the post divestiture, TV era it had the same problems that plagued all the big houses.

That doesn’t really explain it’s lackluster financial performance for the first twenty years.

I’d say it suffered from really poor site selection. Madison St. was(and still is) the primary trip generator and the Paradise was well off of the commercial strip.
