If you go into the head shop by the DWP and walk to the back, look up. The skylight still has the old ‘Heads n Highs’ grafitti and posters up there. The blacklight room is still there too, now an ‘employees only’ store room.
The Army Navy surplus store is still on the Boulevard too, though only a shadow of it’s former self.
It was further up the boulevard almost to Panorama City. It was near the Big 5 store at Sherman Way & Van Nuys Blvd, across the boulevard from Valley Hospital, Sherman Circle (where Farrell’s was) and McDonalds.
I don’t recall too much about the Capri theater. It closed in the late sixties or early seventies. We mostly went to the Fox Theater up the Blvd or to the Americana in Panorama City.
Regarding my last, ‘Targets’ may have been filmed at the other end of the basin in the Reseda Drive In (another of my haunts). Still well worth seeing if you want to remember the valley of our youth.
I saw lots of film noir at the Beverly Canon during the early 1970’s. I particularly remember seeing ‘The Big Sleep’, ‘The Maltese Falcon’, and several other Bogart films here.
During the summer vacations in the 1960’s, we would buy discount coupons for the matinees at the La Reina. We could go to double features with cartoons for 35 cents. Loved that theater with the big stage and balconys.
Fox Theater and all of Van Nuys Blvd from Valley Vista to Pacoima is quite familiar to me. Went to Kester, Van Nuys Jr High, and Van Nuys High. Saw many a film at the old Fox, and the other theaters in the area (Sepulveda Drive In, Van Nuys Drive In, La Reina Theater)
Cruising on Wednesday nights…..til it all came to an end.
The Sepulveda Drive In was originally behind the Sherwin Williams paint store (now where Wendys is) down the Boulevard from the Builders Emporium (also long gone). In 1968 there was a movie about a teenage sniper filmed there titled ‘Targets’ which starred Boris Karloff. If you ever get a chance to see it, it has many panoramic views of the Drive in, the Valley towards Canoga Park/Reseda, Sepulveda Blvd, the Dam Basin (when it was still Maria’s cornfield) and plenty of cool cars.
Some things still remain,

Aloha Thomas,
We probably know each other, my family grew up at 5416 Burnet, literally around the corner from your folks. Did you know Larry on Clark?

Aloha Everyone,
The Victory was another of my favorite Drive Ins, loved the western mural. Saw many a movie there.
The Kam swap meet is still a great deal, only 50 cents admission. The Drive In concession booths/restrooms are still there and in use.
