Good to see that the Roxy is still up and running. I started my career in the motion picture business at the Roxy in August 1968 under the management of Bud and Myrtle Rawlings. I was only 14 at time time, and got a chance to work in the projection booth. Fond memories of 2 projectors, 18 minutes reels and switch overs, and carbon arcs. We ran double features with a cartoon. The first films I ran at the Roxy was a double feature of “The Sons of Katie Elder” and “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” which was well over 5 hours. What a bargain for a $1 adult ticket. Popcorn was 15 cents, 25 cents with butter and sodas were $10, 20 & 30 cents. Candy, 15 or 25 cents. Now I operate my own indi in Camas WA (Liberty Theatre www.camasliberty.com) and also book the very popular Bear Tooth Theatrepub in Anchorage AK. How things have changed in 45 years. Next week our theatre in Camas wil be converted to digital, no more loading 35mm film prints. Thanks to everyone that helps keep these small town treasures open.

The Rootstock Capital Management LLC has just acquired the Historic Liberty Theatre in Camas and is in the process of giving this classic small town cinema some TLC in preparation for a grand opening in mid-March. The plan is to reopen as a traditional movie theatre and transition into food and “adult beverage” service during the first year. The theatre currently seats 342 in the main auditorium of which 80 seats are in the balcony. During the transition, the balcony will be turned into a 21+ are so that beer and wine can be served. A small second screen on the premises will be renovated with new seats and digital projection for showing specialty films and hosting private parties. When it reopens later this year it will be called “The Granada” the original name of the Liberty when opened in 1927. New phone number 360-859-9555, on the web at camasliberty.com and check us out on Facebook, Liberty Theatre of Camas and Washougal.
