After the City of Riverside took over the Fox Theater and under Dom Betro’s authority all the original theater seats were removed and a large hole was punched through the screen of the Fox Theater to get the seating out. The projectors were removed and trashed. The Fox Theater will not show movies but host live events only. The Fox Theater has been basically ransacked and nearly all historical elements were removed.
I used to spend a lot of time in the De Anza. There were giant Art Deco figures painted on the walls. In the 1980s many punk shows were held there. I grew up with the De Anza. It’s too bad they tore out all the Deco stuff to make a health food store.
My father worked at the Golden State Theater as a kid. He used to tell me that back then he had to wear an usher suit with cherub wings. I used to get into the theater as a kid and run around the back rooms and aisles. There were about 300 cats living in the theater. The theater was gutted by a fire and was torn down back in about 1990 or so.
Before the theater was renovated it was the Loring Opera House where Sarah Bernhardt performed. Many famous people performed in that old building. There was a famous oyster house in the basement during this time. When I ran around there it was a used bookstore.

The Rubidoux was built and had it’s first show in 1948.

There’s also the Rubidoux Drive In Theater. I think these are the only two Drive Ins in Riverside.

It’s now a parking lot.
