Mayfair Cinema Stepney
The Mayflower cinema was built on the site of the former Palace cinema. This photograph shows a front elevation with beige faïence tiles relieved with bands of green and black. A main feature being an interchangeable illuminated sign board advertising current and forthcoming films. Architect Leslie Kemp used many variations of these on the facade of his cinemas, possibly the most outstanding was that of the Havana cinema Romford. Surmounted above is viewed the cinema name ‘Mayfair’ in green capital letters. A new lighting product of the time ‘Barlux’ tubular lighting was used on the whole of the narrow frontage and below the canopy ‘Barlux’ tube white opal glass was installed within metal channelling fixed to the underside.
