The very first theatre Sidney Foulkes built was the Arcadia for William Catlin of the ‘Catlin Follies’ which appeared opposite the beach. Mainly a wooden construction with stadium seating fitted into the railway embankment and very close to Colwyn Bay train station. The photograph above shows the Catlin Arcadia with the seaside crowds, at top right is the railway signal box and top left the signal gantry prior to Colwyn Bay station. The Arcadia was built by Foulkes himself to his own plan in 1900 at the age of sixteen after serving his apprenticeship as a master joiner.
