Plaza Cinema Swansea

A rare photograph above shows organist Tom Jenkins on opening night Saturday 14th February 1931 at the console of the Christie three manual organ. The large up to date Super Cinema was built and owned by the Picture Cinema Company., with a capacity of 3,000. The Christie organ at the Plaza was one of the finest examples of its time. It had three organ chambers over the proscenium arch, one for the solo stops, another for the accompaniment stops, the third housing the action. In May 1932 Tom Jenkins returned to the Plaza to broadcast weekly recitals through the Western Regional Station to thousands of listeners. He continued playing as solo organist at some the most important cinemas in South Wales.
