Carlton Cinema Nottingham

Photograph of the Carlton taken June 1968. The tall windows installed on the first floor were to allow light to flood into the area which was intended to be a restaurant, however, this did not materialise as WW2 commenced on the 1st September, 1939.The Carlton opened six weeks later without its large restaurant and cafe area although in hindsight it would have been quite successful as were films shown during the war years and after. Another blast from the past was the shop leased out by the Carlton to ‘Brighter Homes’ see to the right of entrance, these nationwide retail shops with their fronts painted in cream with their name in chrome lettering above the shop window were suppliers for home improvements long before B&Q emerged.
