Gaumont Palace Barnstable
Photograph showing the original façade of the Gaumont Palace taken several months after opening. Built by the Architectural practice of William Henry Watkins, Bristol who was contracted to build four Gaumont Palaces, for Gaumont-British which Watkins passed to his Head Designer Percy Bartlett. They were Barnstable opening May 1931, Coventry (Bartlett’s finest) opening October 1931, with Plymouth November 1931, the fourth being Gaumont Palace Exeter May 1932. Several months later the young and talented Percy Bartlett left the Watkins practice to work for Boots of Nottingham, where eventually he became their Chief Architect.
