Coliseum Cinema Gorleston
Photograph showing the original classical style Coliseum which opened on August Bank Holiday Monday 1913 with the silent film “The Mysteries of Paris”. The photograph viewed above was taken in 1926 showing “The Road to Mandalay” of the silent film starring Lon Chaney. Viewed here we see the four shops incorporated into the façade either side of the entrance, this was once a popular option as not only was there a rent coming from these premises but also greatly reduced the council rate level of the cinema. This idea was used by many cinema owners right up to 1939. Interestingly Maypole stores became a large grocery concern up to WW2 after which they gradually started to close during the 1950’s until taken over.
