I was there recently for church services, the congregation
did a wonderful job in restoring the building and adding
a upper balcony for the overflow.
There is a huge chandelier in the middle of the room, was
it always there or is it an added touch-up ??
Who in Yosemite Sam are the Diaz Brothers ??, I am surprised by
now it hasn’t been renamed “ TEATRO RIDGEWOOD”, showcasing
shlock Spanish films or Ricky Martin.
Magic Johnson !! where are you when we need you.
I first saw this theatre in 1995 when my wife and I were
house hunting in Putnam County.
We evidently settled in Carmel, NY.
The theatre was the only in all of Putnam until the eightplex
opened in Carmel in 1998.
It was still showing first-run movies until about 1999.
I think the very last movies was “Santa Clause” with
the actor from “Home Improvement”. its still there in
Brewster, I think you can rent it for parties or other venues.

How do I do a full history search on a building whether residential
or commercial, which involves the deeds and transfers of all the
owners to that particular bldg ?
I tried NYC.Gov, but all they have is location id numbers and
violations.
Any information will be most appreciated.
That’s sure one wealth of information from Orlando concerning
the theatres in the Bed/Stuy- Brownsville section.
During my high shool years I used to ride the B7 bus
to East Flatbush.
Along Saratoga was the remains of the Miller Theatre
and after passing Atlantic Ave. I would see a grand building
that was formerly the Loews Pitkin, but it was already closed
by the 70’s. One of the last remaining stores of a bygone era
was the hat/haberdashery store on the Pitkin and Saratoga Ave.
The Pitkin was so big, that the church that was there at that
time called it a Cathedral !!
Thanks PeterK,
Its great reminiscing the Ridgewood of the 70’s.
No I don’t remember Bickford’s, but I do remember the
coffee shop with the newstand on the corner of Wyckoff and
Palmetto. A pizzeria under the el, which was next to what
is now KFC.
And a candy store off Grove st and Wyckoff.
After 75', I moved to East Flatbush.
Thanks PeterK,
the 70’s were good times, I went to a special catholic for gifted
students that rented the basement of St. Brigids.
McDonald’s just opened in 74 and the Madison was showing
“Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, the lobby would feature upcoming
movies like “The Tangerine Man”.
The neighborhoods along Wyckoff and St. Nicholas Ave. were
nice, compared to today.
The B26 would take me home to Bushwick, Aaah, I could keep going.
My mother-in-law remembers going to the Parthenon in the 50'
and my dad used to watch boxing shows at the St. Nicholas Arena.
The “Post Office” disco brought back memories, I never went there
but there was always bad press in and out of the club.
Does anyone remember the hair styling salon on Cypress not far
from the old Martin’s Paint.
I think the name was Luigi’s ??, took my haircut there in 77'
I was laughing when you wrote “Frenchie’s Gym, 5 bucks and a
workout in 1993
Disco Mundo was a spanish record store, that also sold instruments.
Thanks for the memories (lol)
Palm Beach County is sometimes refer to as the Sixth boro of NYC (lol)
The Williamsburgh was between Marcy Ave and Havemeyer, it was a huge
theatre that closed in the mid 80’s. it was a disco for a few years
and now it houses 99c stores. My first recollection of it was back
in 1977.
The Commodore, I am not sorry its closed, it was a hangout for
loud talkers and potheads, but I’m sure the bldg. has a future.
Hi PeterK,
The Marcy station is my current home station, I live with my
in-laws on Division Ave.
I am here temporary after moving from Carmel, NY, I will be living
soon in Royal Palm Beach, Florida, where there is a mega 18plex
theatre on Southern Blvd.
The YMCA is still there, its been partitioned between small businesses, a city housing dept. and a mormon church.
Within one Broadway block was the Commodore, Williamsburgh and
now the Aster.
Thanks RobertR, I knew there was a business there before the
church opened.
Was the catering hall I was thinking about further down Myrtle
Ave near a church named ST PANCREAS ??
Not only is beautifully renovated, the church added a
upper balcony !!
I remember the building in the early 90’s as either a catering hall or a gym. I am open to corrections.
From movies to chinese food (Good Friends) only in America.
Bway, I did a quick survey of the bldg from the M train.
The building goes straight down about 50 or 60 feet and
then swings left to an open room about 30x 60.
that must have been the seating and screen room.
Another treasure found !!
John Chappell writes that the Jefferson closed in the early 60’s,
but I remember it showing movies in the 70’s.
At that time I was coming into my early teens, maybe it re-opened
under a new owner.
After the movies, the crowd would head to White Tower for hamburgers
and fries.
I remember watching the Holmes-Cooney fight on close circuit.
This was a huge theatre that was not far from the Jefferson
theatre that showed movies and the White Tower burger shop
on Second ave.
I didn’t know until today that there were two Delancey theatres.
I was trying to pinpoint which one I went to in the 70’s.
The twinbill was “Carrie” and Taxi Driver".
I remember the theatre had a newer look, so it couldn’t have
been the one next to Ratners.
By that time the theatre had seen better days and the clientel
was as rowdy as the Commodore in WMB.
Thanks Bway and Lostmemeory for the Belvedere, when I mentioned
the Miller theatre, I remember an abandoned building on Saratoga
Ave along the B7 busline.
I may have been mistaken with the Cosby title, the one you mentioned
Bway is the show CBS televised in the 90’s.
The along Ave. M is the NBC show that garnered strong ratings in
the 80’s. I remember seeing Cosby signing autographs on M and 14st.
By the way the church did a superb job on the renovations of the
former Belvedere.
Gentlemen, PeterK, Bway, lostmemory
May I pick your brains.
There is a former theatre in Glendale across the street
from StopnShop on Myrtle Ave, it now houses the church
Christ Tabernacle.
From the facade on the top, I think it read “Miller Theatre”.
It looks like it was from the 20’s.
Any history on it ?
In the late 70’s until 1984 when I lived in East Flatbush, I
remember this theatre was still open, by then it was showing
black action and kung-fu movies.
Funny when a neighborhood begins it decline, these are always
the kind of movies that are always shown.
There were times when it was shut down for periods of days or
months, I do remember the marquee and the price of admission
being around $3.
I never frequented it nor do I miss it.(apologies to the Rugby
aficianados)
Nice pictures Lostmemory, the Vitagraph smokestack picture brought
back some memories, isn’t that the NBC Brooklyn studios where
the Cosby show was filmed during the 80’s ?.
From 84 -90 I lived on Ocean Ave off Ave. M, where I enjoyed
watching movies at the Kingsway.
It was and still a great neighborhood to live in.
I was there recently for church services, the congregation
did a wonderful job in restoring the building and adding
a upper balcony for the overflow.
