United Artist Theater closes its doors
The United Artists theater here will close its doors tomorrow and will be followed by the Fox theater one week later, officials of both movie houses reaffirmed today. The first announcement was made on Nov. 18 by the managers of the two film houses. They were the two remaining first-run houses in the city, which once had 10 theaters operating around-the-clock. Television, drive-in movies and high overhead were believed responsible for continuing loss of revenue at the two theaters. But United Artists officials said that other theaters in their chain were also suffering losses though not so great as experienced in Richmond. Fox officials also said that losses in other theaters were not as great as in Richmond and that their overhead here was extremely high. The city manager’s office had conferred with the San Francisco offices of both theater chains in a last-ditch efforts to keep at least one of the two theaters open but no change was made in the closing plan.
