I remember seeing Yellow Submarine there on a double bill with 10 Rillington Place. Saw Summer of ‘42 there as well and remember leaving in a trance. Just before the theater closed I took my video camera and shot the outside, inside and downstairs. Still have the video.
I remember going to the Surf Theater in 1961 to see “One Eyed Jacks” with Marlon Brando which I never forgot. Also “Cinderfella”. Directly across from the Surf theater was the Normandy Theater.
I remember seeing the 3 Stooges in person at the Biltmore in the early 60’s. The kids went totally beserk, screaming and applauding. It was one of the best moments of my childhood. My day camp took us kids to see “7th Voyage of Sinbad” there one summer (1958). Candy counter was against the back wall.
Loved going to this Theater as a kid. Saturday matinees in the late 50’s cost 26 cents. Candy Counter was on the right as you entered the theater. The matrons reminded me of the SS. Saw Martin and Lewis movies, 3 Stooge shorts, The East Side Kids, The Delicate Delinquent, April Love and tons of monster movies including Rodan, 20 Million Miles to Earth, House of Wax. I recall they also had dish night for the adults. Once held the distinction of being thrown out of the theater once when the clod I was with started annoying some girls sitting in front of us. The appliance store across the street was where I bought my 45’s.
As a kid, I remember my mom taking me to see a double feature at the Embassy (1958) of “The BLob” and “I Married a Monster from Outer Space”. The candy counter was always located on the left as you entered the theater. They sold Van Houten Chocolate Bars in 3 flavors, Milk chocolate, Semi-Sweet and Orange. They also sold some great cough drops called “Gem”?. My Dad took me to see “Journey to the Center of the Earth” along with some rock and roll movie with Ray Charles in it. “Requiem For A Heavyweight” played there and I think a movie called “The Last Angry Man”.
Howard – I believe you graduated from Jefferson in 1959. Did you know a guy named Lenny?
