Haven’t seen too many films at the Zigfield, especially since I had Lowe’s Orpheum 1 on 86 St. as my regular go to for “big” movies. I viewed Dracula (79), Raiders of the Lost Ark (82 re-release), and Phantom Menace there and enjoyed seeing those movies at the Zigfield, particularly Dracula which fit the feel of the theater very nicely.
PH you make a great point about the sound system at Orpheum 1. Very full sound with lots of impact. I still have fond memories of how great Raiders of the Lost Ark sounded there.
Saw alot of movies here as a kid during the early to mid 70s. We called it the “dollar” theater because admission was, well, $1. I stopped going in ‘78 when they wouldn’t let me in to see Star Wars during it’s re-release without a parent. Sheesh it was only PG.
I’ll always remember this theater for the horror flicks I saw here as a kid, Dawn of the Dead (78), Halloween (78), and Carpenter’s remake of The Thing as well as schlock like Blood Beach. Also remember seeing flicks like Capricorn One and Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid here.
Loved Orpheum 1 in my childhood during the 70s to early 80s. Remember seeing Star Wars 1-3 (Ep. 4-6), Superman, Alien, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Fog (80) and many others big and small. At Orpheum 2 I remember flicks like Start Trek 2 and The Black Hole. After seeing a movie at one of these theaters we would go to Flaming Embers for their salad, burger and baked potato.
Only saw one flick here as the Sutton was a bit out of my way, Bladerunner, June ‘82.
