Went to restaurant opposite,and immediately recognised this CIMA building.Sporting posters about Queens 70th Jubilee so nothing happening here for over a year
I am working just up the street from here.When i go round the corner past this site with the Oceania nightclub there is an Iceland.Above the shop is a fascia which to me looks as if it belongs to the cinema.I will try and post a picture.So maybe this section was demolished.The nightclub appears to be closed.
I was at the Odeon Barnet yesterday morning.I was on my own in Screen 1.Before the lights went out i was able to see much of the original art deco plasterwork and lights.Well worth a look at if you are in the cinema.
I was watching “The Strange Case Of Blondie”.This was one of the Scotland yard series made at Merton park,This film was made in 1954.A police car was traili8ng a suspect along the Strand.for a few seconds she is shown walking along the outside of The Tivoli.Of interest as there seem to be little photos available of this building.although i went to most of the West End cinemas.this is one that i never went to it,probably because it closed in 1956.
Well now that it has reopened what about a few organ concerts.London is currently bereft of venues.I used to go the ATOS concerts each month.Now i have to travel down to Portslade Town Hall once a month.
i have seen photos of the exterior but not of the interior.It was a beautiful cinema.If you were sitting in the stalls you had to make sure that you did not sit anywhere near the supporting beams that would obscure your view.What has happened to this building and its successor are a stark example of the almighty power of the supermarket chains to get their way and the craven cowering attitude of local councils,the planners and councillors.Thier needs are more important than those of the nlocal residents.Golders Green which once had 4 cinemas now has none.Not unusual but no less sad for all that.If it existed today i think that it would be at least listed as 2*.However such is progress.
sheer wanton vandalism of the type that has occured right throughout Noprth London.I have photos of it being bulldozed.Never been to the Artsdepot and never want to.
When Classic took over this cinema,they made it their flagship.there were many stage shows.i remember syd Lawrence and his orchestra and the comedian Libby Morris.I again was present at the last performance.
Again i was present at its closure.This was a cinema with a very attractive interior.there was no circle.With a very small car park,it wa s very difficult to park nearby.Rarely attracted big audiences.
This was one of my “locals” and i was present at its last performance.I believe that it was the last working cinema in the UK to bear the name “Gaumont”.It was never rebranded as an Odeon.
After closure Rank proposed to use this as a Sundown balroom/nightclub.However because there were restrictive covenants restricting this use an application was made to the Lands Tribunal to vary them This was turned down thus dooming the cinema.The cinema was always used by the local synagogue for its High holiday services.
I tried to keep the Ionic open.However Sainsburys just wrent interested.They were going to use it as as a health club.However this never materialised.The foyer is part of the store .The cinema in the basement is empty.Anothere xample of a big chain store getting their way against the wishes of the community.
I was at the last night.Very sad as it was still a very popular cinema.If it hadnt been for the fact that Cannon acquired the Classic Hendon at the same time i doubt that this cinema would have shut,at least at that time.
