I saw THE WARRIORS there in ‘79 in its run-down heyday.

Does anyone remember the Mayflower Lounge that used to be next door to the cinema? I understand it burned down in ‘62 or '63. Thanks.

I am looking for a photo of the old Elgin Theater for a documentary. Might anyone have one? It would be hugely appreciated. Please let me know at: . Thanks!

I saw Edward Scissorhands here one snowy night in 1991. The next night was when the shooting took place as the other screen was showing New Jack City. I thought this was a beautiful old theater. It had a kind of modest grandeur to it.

This story really outrages me. How can we help outside Lakewood?

NeonSky commented about Continental Theater on Dec 5, 2009 at 10:18 pm

The Continental was hands down my favorite theater in OKC growing up. Here’s a memory — was anyone else there?? In 1980, my brother and I went to the Continental for the premiere of CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC, one of the worst movies ever made, but over the passage of time has taken on the patina of camp classic. For the local premiere, the film’s co-writer and producer, Allan Carr (producer of several disco movies of the era) flew in on a helicopter which landed in the parking lot. He got out wearing a big white cowboy hat and a white rodeo suit — his homage to us “Okies” I suppose — but for us it was rather embarrassing. There were only about 20 of us gathered in the parking lot on that hot summer evening for the big splashy “premiere” so the whole event took on a sad, anti-climactic air, especially since the Continental had gone to such great lengths to promote it, searchlights and all. I still miss the Continental. I also saw Gone with the Wind there in revival, Moonraker and The Pink Panthere there. Cheers all!

I saw THE GUMBALL RALLY here in ‘76, and a second-run screening of WILLY WONKA & CHOC FACTORY. I seem to remember sitting in the balcony. Anyone else remember a balcony?

Thanks for the correction, Kevin. I must have missed 200 Motels but I’ll look for it in Netflix! —David Savage

Yes Roadsideok that was the Mayflower. The structure
was completely reconfigured as the Asian restaurant and
is thus unrecognizable. I will post a photo of the old Mayflower
in my next post so you guys can see what it looked like in the 70s.

I saw the first run of WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY there in ‘71, EARTHQUAKE (in Sensurround), YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN in '72, and many, many more. I remember seeing Danny Williams in the lobby too. Just sayin’!

Thank you Ken. Yes, I thought so.
Wish I had been old enough to see movies
there growing up.

Is this the old boarded up theater next to the Chinese restaurant
near Ten-Penn? The photo link above is broken.

I saw so many great movies at the May, but the one I remember most vividly was THE WARRIORS in ‘79. Does anyone else remember seeing it there?

It was a porno cinema long before 1980s — I remember when it was
showing skin flicks as early as 1971, 72…

Does anyone have an update on the preservation/renovation status
of The Capitan as of Oct. ‘08?
