Dear Sally Gordon,
I do remember Miss Honey, she was the owner of the dance studio. she had a daughter named Judi Terri which was why it was name that. Their last name was something like Novelli. I remember another dance teacher named Miss Eleanor and it there were others my memory is failing me or they came after I was gone. I took lessons there from around 1958 till 1965-66. I am not sure when your friend Betty was there. Sorry I could not be of help in finding her.

This is the theatre that is the one I remember was across the street from where my aunt lived on Ocean Avenue. This is the one that she saw Frank Sinatra in and I think Elvis. Boy this was many years ago. This really shows my age!!!!

This is the theatre that I believe my parents, aunts told me that Elvis and Frank Sinatra performed in way back when.

Wow, that picture is great. I just recently joined this website and am amazed at the memories that it is bringing back!!!!! so much so that I went last night to one of the old theatres in Rutherford, NJ that I went to as a kid and posted my experience on that movies page. Now I want to visit all of the theatres that are still there. That is my plan and I aim to do it and post as I go to each one. Since I still live in the Northern NJ area I can get to most of them pretty easily. I will keep you all posted.

I spent many nights here since my both parents were born and raised in Greenville section of Jersey City. We moved out to North Arlington when I was 3 but many of our relatives still lived in Jersey City. My dad worked in the Amercian Can Company as did my both uncles along with many other Jersey City residents back then. My dad also bowled on a bowling league at the Roosevelt Lanes and I remember going there also. Years later I took my kids to the drive in there to see Grease. I also remember going to see the Grateful Dead at Roosevelt Stadium whish is not gone also. Many memories in my mind are physically gone in NJ. I guess that is progress or just part of getting old, a part I wish were different. Other countries preserve their older buildings, stadiums, etc. rather than tearing them down, I wish we did the same here.

I just was here last night (9/6/09) and had a very strange experience. I am hoping it was because it was Sunday night of Labor Day weekend. I went to see the 7:00 showing of “Shorts” with my granddaughter and thought it be fun to go to a theatre that I went to as a kid since I grew up in the neighboring town of North Arlington. We had the only 2 tickets for the 7:00 showing which was sort of neat to be in Cinema 2 alone and feel like it was our own private theatre. Cinema 1 was suppose to show “The Time Travelers Wife” and they did not even show it since not even 1 ticket was sold for this movie. GI Joe played with a couple of people in there and Glorious Bestards played also with a ghost audience. Afterwards we walked around and looked into what use to be the old Rivoli and it is still in need of major renovation from what I could see. It was sort of eerie being there with basically no one around. My 10 year old granddaughter thought it was really cool. I just hope that on other nights they have a much larger attendance because if not I have no idea how they will be able to maintain keeping the doors open.

I lived in North Arlington which was only 2 towns away from this drive in and I grew up going there, then I took my kids there before it was gone. I went as a kid in my p.j’s and went on the swings and would end up falling asleep after the first movie of the “double feature.” It ended up going from the 1 screen to 2 and of course using the radio rather than the speakers. I remember the green coiled mosiquito Pic thing they would give when you went in. I remember as a teenager some of hiding in the trunk since we did not have enough money to pay for everyone. For awhile this also was used for the Route 3 Flea Market. Unfortunately, in this area of NJ the land is prime and it just did not generate enough income to support the very high real estate taxes in this area. I still go once a year to the only drive that is close enough to go to which is the Warwick Drive-In which is in Warwick NY. It takes me about an hour to get there but well worth the trip.

I spent many Saturday afternoons here in the 60’s. I also performed on the stage here every June during those years since I attended dance classes in the Judi Terri Dance School which was above the theatre and the school rented the theatre every year for our recital. It was exciting being “back stage” there – although small it was still very exciting. I cannot even imagine it being split into a 7 screen theatre. I will have to go back just to see how they did this. I am wondering if the bathrooms are still down that awful staircase!!!! Boy did this bring back memories – so much that last night I actually did go to the old Rutherford Rivoli which is now the Williams Center and boy was that a trip!!!!! Me and my granddaughter were the only people in the small theatre to see the 7:00 showing of the movie “Shorts” – I guess because it was Sunday of Labor Day weekend, but still…………….
