I actually saw a lot of your contributions of pictures on the Tapeshare website. What a great time we had! I lived there for 41 years (the last 10-15 not being so great) but before that I wouldn’t trade my life there for anything!
I don’t know if you remember me but I met you last year at a club in Copaige with my in-law Adele Leccese (Mannarino). You were with Denise and Monica. I am a good friend of Billy Baierlein who will be turning 60 on April 26th. His wife is throwing him a big party. I used to live on Jamaica Avenue between Norwood and Logan. Hope you are well.
I don’t know if you remember me, I lived on Jamaica Avenue between Logan and Norwood. I wrote to you a couple of times on Classmates. I remember your Mother soooo well! My Mother and my Sister and I always went to Cordes and your Mother was the one who served us our Ice Cream etc. I remember my Mother was on a “diet” once and your Mother said “try this new diet soda”. It was liquid “No-Cal” and then she added some seltzer. It was awful LOL!!! If you want you can write me off this board at
Boy I remember it all! Only lived a few blocks from ENY Vocational High school. Still remember all the kids walking up Logan Street coming home at 3 p.m.
I’m one year older than you (53). Went to PS 65 – 1959-1965, then 171 from 1965-1968, then Franklin K Lane from 1968-1972. Did you ever “hang out” in Cypress Hills/East New York on any of the “corners” there?
Actually “Greek Easter” has to do with the Jewish Passover. It needs to be after the Jewish Passover because that in effect was the “last supper”. Hence, sometimes the 2 Easters are weeks apart. This coming year – 2008 – Western Easter is March 23 and Orthodox Easter is April 27.
Yes, it was a Russian Orthodox Church since it’s inception in the 1930’s. My family was affiliated with the Church until we moved to Long Island in 1995. Back then most people thought of it as a church to go to on “Greek Easter”.
Yes Baerenklau was about 1-½ blocks from where I lived. I went there many times with my Grandmother to pay the “oil bill”. No sense in wasting a 3 cent stamp when we lived so close! LOL!! They had a water cooler in the office which at the time was “new” so I found it facinating and kept asking for “drinks of water” LOL!!
I actually went to Church on Glenmore Avenue between Pennsylvania and New Jersey Avenues in the heart of East New York. The parish was Holy Trinity Orthodox Church. Most people thought it was a “Greek Church”.
I lived from 1954-1995 (41 years) on Jamaica Avenue between Norwood and Logan Streets about 3 blocks east of Highland Park. My family owned the house since 1923 and then when my Uncle passed away in 1994 we sold the house. I too live on Long Island since 1995.
My daughter’s in-laws lived on Glenmore Avenue for many years. Their last names are Competello and Leccese. Sound familiar? I believe they went to St. Rita’s parish.
I love having multi-generation’s around. It sure makes for an interesting life! I’m also lucky enough to be retired after a 35 plus year career at a major NYC Bank. Oh Well, I’m off to take my granddaughter to her dancing class now! LOL!!

PS My daughter actually married someone who’s family is originally from “East New York”. We have mutual friends/acquaintances. Talk about 6 degrees of separation LOL!!
I was 53 this past May. I have a 32 year old married daughter, an 11 year old son and 2 grandkids – ages 5 and 3. I really am spanning different generations LOL!!
Us girls on the block always played “Double Dutch” and Hopscotch. Cost you nothing but a piece of chalk and some rope “back in the day” to play those games. Now these kids need $600 games. (Geezz – I must be gettin' old LOL!!)
I say thank God that we have e-mail and sites like these. I too miss lots from my days in Cypress Hills/East New York. I know from reading and seeing all these sites (i.e. Tapeshare.com)that there are lots of people who feel like I do. I wish we could all go back in a time machine for just one day and relieve our best times there!
So sorry about your loss. With so many people dying in the WWII generation it’s really imperative to try and gather all information while you can! Never realized all of this stuff would mean something to me someday! (lost my cousin in 2000 who I thought would maybe have known your Aunt).
Sorry – I misunderstood. Thought it was your Sister. I actually had 2 cousins who graduated around that time 1946-1947 from Lane. Their names were Irene Georoff and Olga Georoff. Maybe she remembers them? They lived on Jamaica Avenue between Logan and Norwood.
You mention in a post up above that your younger Sister lived in Cypress Hills from 1957-1968. What school did she go to? How old is she? Just wondering if she was someone that I would have known from school.
Love that tapeshare! Been looking at that site from the beginning. Grew up on Jamaica Avenue between Logan and Norwood near Highland Park. Went to PS 65, JHS 171 and Franklin K. Lane High. Recognize lots of people and places. They even have a picture of my old block circa 1910!

Hi JoAnn,
That was my Sister Marsha. She was the one with the long Brown Hair.

Hi PKoch,
Where are you located in lower Manhattan? I worked for many years at 55 Water and Street and 4 New York Plaza. Are you anywhere near there?

I believe that Liberty Park was on Liberty Avenue and Atkins or somewhere in that vicinity in East New York. Please correct me someone if I am wrong.
