If this is where the Stages Niteclub was then it is now closed even for that purpose.Many of the theatres on king street were changed into Clubs.This created a zoo downtown of drunks and drug dealers.All of the clubs are closed just like their predicetors and the downtown core is starting to clean up.
Its too bad some of the comments of people from K-W are so negative.As in every downtown core in our province, people started to migrate from the core to the outskirts.Just look at what happened to Brantford!!It was the choice of the major theatre owners to close up shops in the downtown.It was after that happened that the city had to make some plans as to what to do with the empty buildings.I agree that it was too bad this happened but it was inevitable like in every other major city around.This theatre was absolutely gorgeous as was the Capitol right beside it.Peopls dont want to come back to the urban core and that is sad but true.The city has some plans for the king street strip.Once all the bars have closed(which some of these theatres became)things will clean-up and maybe the core will live again.It is sad that these buildings wont be part of this!!By the way-OKTOBERFEST is the largest Bavarian celebration outside of the one held in Munich and also offers a Thanksgiving Parade-the only one left in Canada.The fstival runs 9 days.
When I was a young teen I used to go to the arcade that was oposite the ticket booth in its own small room.I remember playing Asteroids there in the late 70’s and early 80’s.It was the closest Arcade to where I lived.I did see a movie there in the early 80’s called “The Fish That Stole Pittsburgh"It was a cheezy movie that I recently saw on TV.The theatre was down a set of stairs at the north end of Frederick Street Mall and was opened when the mall actually enclosed itself to provide indoor tenants.I was there for the first time in over 20yrs last summer to see Robots.I swear it still has the same seats.Its a no thrill theatre now with a small selection of food and beverages but has the cheapest prices in town.
I remember wanting to go here when I was a kid but never did.We used to drive by it on Highway 6 going back towards the 401 on a Sunday nite after leaving my grandmothers place in Hamilton.I was fun trying to figure out what movie was playing.These memories go back to the early and mid 70’s for me.
