My mother worked at the Paramount and Universal exchanges in Winnipeg and as I said my grandfather, after working at Universal and RKO, went over to Rothstein Theaters. That’s when he was awarded the Canadian Motion Picture Pioneer of the Year (Hy Swartz).
My mom says we did go to movies at this theater,as we went from Minnesota to Winnipeg several times a year but I don’t remember as I would have been under 10 years old.

It’s funny you mention the Brookdale equipment because John had showed me through the Brookdale and we went to see Tron there, I always liked the theater but he said the sound system was not very good, though it sounded “not bad” to me. But we all know how he knew sound. John and I went to many movies together at the Cooper. I’ll never forget the opening of Star Trek 2 Khan, and the dozens of other untul it closed.

My Grandfather used to work for Rothstein Theaters of Canada and booked all of the movies into this theater for many years. His offices were located in the Marlborough Hotel on the 2nd floor.
This I find very sad. My mother is from Winnipeg and her dad was in the movie business there, working for Rothstein theaters, which booked movies into the theaters in much of Canada. His offices were on the 2nd floor of the Marlborough Hotel, I always remember going there as a kid and seeing tons of posters , pressbooks and promotion materials he was sending out to the theaters.
My Uncle Sammy (my grandfather’s brother) was manager of the Starland and Regent (next door) for many years. In 2007 my mother and I went to Winnipeg and we spent 3-4 days touring her old homes, synagogues and other places she grew up and we went by these 2 theaters and told me my uncle managed these theaters for more than 40 years. I went to show these to my brother on Google maps today and couldn’t find them, and came here and saw they were demolished. How sad, family history and 2 classic theaters gone.
Speaking of Von’s Drive-in….our home was on the hill in Eveleth and we could see the screen perfectly, and I remember when I was around 13-14 watching some of those American International R rated biker/sex movies with binoculars. Several times we snuck onto the property and watched from the bushes, but they had someone guarding the area pretty well and I think both times we were caught and thrown off the property.
Does anyone have any photos of the Granada Theater in Virginia, MN? I spent many weekends of my childhood there and cannot find a single photo of the place and I am having trouble remembering it. I remember well that they showed The Sound of Music every year for a weekend, one performance per night (until its tv showing). I usually went all three nights!
I was lucky enough to tour the theater when it was still running, ran down an hour from Minneapolis. The owner was a very nice gentleman who let me roam the theater freely (while he went to lunch somewhere) for over an hour and a half. It is beautiful inside. The nice thing about the trip is since he was not long away from closing, he showed me about 14 boxes and asked if I wanted them. I arranged for transferring them home and when I started opening them,….lobby card sets from movies like Sound of Music and Greatest Story ever told, 6 boxes full of pressbooks (one for each studio) and the others were one sheets and Boxoffice magazines from the 1940’s and 1950’s.They were not in the basement so were in good shape. Guess my day was very lucky, the final owner of this theater as a movie house was one of the nicest guys I had ever met (and I would still say that had he given me nothing). I am too young to have seen How the West was Won there but my good friend John Novak (who was a projectionist in Minneapolis and worked at this theater from time to time) and we went to see several films including “Testament,” “Star Trek 2” and Paramount’s “The Keep” among others. I am also told that the 1973 re-issue of “The Sound of Music” played here in 70mm, boy what I wouldn’t give to have seen that at the Cooper!

I wish I could find a photo of the Mann downtown, with pictures of the sneak preview held there (before the roadshow release) for The Sound of Music, but this web site doesn’t even have a page for the downtown Mann, or do they under an older name? I only see the Mann Southtown.
I live in Eveleth and went to the Maco and Granada theaters all my life. We were best of friends with the Cohn and Deutsch families, so I got alot of posters and pressbooks when they closed as he let me take anything I wanted which he stored, so about 1200 posters, 1500 pressbooks (or so) and all years of Boxoffice magazines. It sure has been fun reading all of those materials since. I remember these theaters fondly.

My grandfather worked for Rolstein(spelling?) theatres and booked the movies in these cinemas. So we got in free all of the time. We went to Winnipeg many times, maybe 2 or 3 a year while I was young. This year (2005) I am going up and wanted to tour it, so very sad that they have torn it down, it was absolutely beautiful. Shame on the city of Winnipeg

Correction on my comment (2 up)…I was referring to the 1978 reissue of Sound of Music, not the 1973 reissue.
