This was an awesome place to see a film, and could get pretty packed with the right choice of programming. The screen was huge, and for a venue built more as an arena the picture and sound were pretty much spot on. Plus they had a bar open during screenings which was rare in those days
We’ve just re-discovered that louvre when we had all the asbestos removed from the building at the beginning of the summer refit. It was covered on the inside with an asbestos panel, and we got an amazing surprise when the contractors had left and we saw it there!
The Strand SR board is still here, although now stored away. But the 2 fire proof dimmer cabinets are still in situ under the auditorium seating, with all of the equipment still in there gathering dust! And we’ve just been doing a fair bit of work up in the lantern loft putting new lighting bars in, with the cables running back to the old rewind room, which has now become the new lighting / dimmer room
We’re in the process of renovating the Cube Auditorium & Stage at the minute, including replacing the screen and the old single Kalee 35 projector and going back to 2 x 35’s again, this time with Kinoton FP30D’s. As soon as we’re finished and the projection room no longer resembles a building site (!) i’ll get some pics from the exact same vantage points as yours above Paulnd, and post them on here. Those pics are just amazing… great to see we’re still using exactly the same tab controllers, and the old rewind room is finally getting a new lease of life again too!
