My family attended the Calvin many times in the 40’s and 50’s. It was a big event because we lived in Chesterfield and rarely went anywhere in those days.. Our Dentist office was above where Jakes is now.
Are there any photos of the multi bulb flashing marquee? It was an eyecatcher to me.
Saw a lot of great movies here when I was at ET school in 1958. A nice comfortable theater. Many happy memories of the long walk down to this place from the Service School barracks with a stop at building 211 for a couple cheeseburgers. A real treat from the stress of Navy life when I was 18. Glad to see it still operates in the same fashion. There were movies at “Hospitalside” as well if you had seen the movie at “Ross Auditorium” as it was known in those days. There must be other sailors who have fond memories of it. Merrill Bancroft

The picture is MUCH better than the photobucket shot indicates. I have framed it up and it is very nice and shows detail well. It is sort of a brownish black and white photo from possibly a publicity photo from the opening or 1930. “Min and Bill” and “Along Came Youth” is on the marque. It measures 14 ½" x 10 ½". I will do everything I can to see that you get a good copy. I bought this at a flea market not knowing what it was. Nice that you have the organ. Merrill
My understanding is the projectionist is a multi-talented young lady who dresses in 1940’s clothing and adds greatly to the character of the theatwr. She is an excellent writer specializing in early entertainment history particularly radio. She has written the best book available on Amos n' Andy.
