Actually the Kaye building is still standing. if you look at the photo, the theater is the part of the hardware store with the brown bricks on the top.
it replaced the Havana Theater in 1949 when the Havana Theater was destroyed in a fire.
Yes I was there, I must have been about 10. My sister was a rabid fan of the Dave Clark Five. They showed up about Half way through the movie. They were trotted out like prized cattle on stage by a WLS Radio Disc Jockey Named Clark Weber. They didn’t preform, they just stood there while the audience threw candy at them. As soon as they left my sister made me run up on stage and try to get some candy they may have stepped on. Do know how hard it is to get a smashed Spearmint leaf off a stage floor?
Back in the 70’s a high school friend of mine had a summer home in Momence and I used to visit regularly. This must have been around 1973 or 1974 the theater was open and still showing porn.
I was on the hunt for a small pipe organ and was told the Kimball was still there. I remember the theater having a very sleek black Vitrolite facade and a very cool deco marquee with matching attraction boards. I managed to talk they guy selling tickets into letting me in and look around. At this time it already smelled musty and I could see signs of water damage.
Does anyone know what’s going on with the theater now? I see that their website is no longer working.
WOW! Talk a bout a flashback. I grew up in this neighborhood in the 60’s. In those days the area where the Showplace is was the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad switching yards and next to it was Central Soya a soy bean processing plant. Both places weren’t very pretty.
On Saturdays Mom and Dad would send us off on the bus to either the Rockne, Tiffen, or the Will Rogers so they could get a little time away from my sister & me.
The Opera house was demolished in October of 2017 it is an empty lot now.

Acording to the LA Times database,
The Show Shop Theater was located at 404 N. Central in Glendale.
The first movie listing was in 1932.
Sometime between August and December of 1946 The name of the theater was changed to the Arcade.
I don’t have the exact date when the name was changed again to the Villa Glen Theater.

While I was going through Los Angeles Times database (1881-1986)
I disovered some interesting information for the Villa Glen theater:
The first movie listing was in 1932 it was called The Show Shop Theater.
1934 The city of Glendale Bans the showing of “Elysia”, a so called “Nudist Film” at the Show Shop.
January 5th, 1944; a projection booth fire kills a young boy.
Somewhere between August and September 1946 the name was changed to the Arcade Theater.
In 1954 the Arcade drops from the theater listings.
1970 was the first listing I found for the Villa Glen.
Does anyone have any information about the time peroid between 1954 and 1970?
