Thanks CodyZamboni for the great photos & film list. I loved the way this theatre was built, although Waikiki 3 was my favorite theatre. I saw a lot of those movies you mentioned at the twins myself, although I didn’t know that “Halloween” played there…I think I saw that movie at the Nanakuli Cinema…
Thanks for the info, Vito. I wish I would have seen “Let There Be Rock” just to hear that sound system. Yeah, I remember seeing other features here & thinking that sometimes, it was just a little too loud (i.e., certain scenes in “Alien”). The Marina was a great little twin that featured a lot of great movies. Too bad they had awful hot dogs. I really miss these theatres. Multi-plexes just don’t work for me!
One of the dumpiest theatres with the weirdest employees and clientele. Pretty odd features booked here as well. Anyone remember “Buckstone County Prison” or “Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks”? I believe that “Caligula” played here as well.
When the AC/DC documentary “Let There Be Rock” played here, I remember reading (and hearing from my friends) that a special sound system was installed just for that feature. Does anyone have any insight into this? The Cinerama already had what I thought was a first-rate sound system. Also (slightly off topic), I remember the Marina Twins having really crisp, clear sound as well…maybe it was just me.
It’s really odd how certain theatres can exist for decades yet seem to slip under the radar. I remember the Liberty as being an old broken-down building with a neon sign yet no marquee. I remember the Empress for its unique design. I’m still looking for pics of Kapiolani & Kapahulu Theatres.
Just a quick FYI: The last movie to play at Waikiki #3 before renovation was “High Road To China.” The first movie to play after renovation was the dreadful “Psycho II.”
Chuck, the theatre in that picture looks more like the old Empress Theatre. I sort of remember the Liberty Theatre being situated in between two other buildings.
Does anyone remember the name of the movie that played here as the second feature to the Kikaida 3D movie from the 70’s?
