Image description: This image is of the Apollo Theater, built in 1912 at 306-308 West Milwaukee Street. Janesville residents watched vaudeville and productions presented on stage seven days a week. The theater could seat 700-800 on the main floor, the balcony and box seats. Shows were presented 7 days a week. The Ziegfield Midnite Follies was the most renown act to appear at the Apollo. Above the theater was a ballroom with a shell shaped band stand where George Hatch taught ballroom and ballet on the big smooth dance floor. This photograph was taken about 1943 when the theater was showing movies. Just up the street at 318 W Milwaukee Street was Ray’s Tower Restaurant. The Apollo closed during World War II, and was reported by the Wisconsin State Journal to be razed in 1956. It was actually saved by a developer and transformed into the Cullen Building. Rock County Social Services occupied the building for a number of years. The space is now a parking lot.
