Found Sand Street in Lackawanna today; it’s a one block long dead end street off of Center Street. The house numbers run from 1 to 19; there is one vacant lot. My guess is that there was never a theater on the vacant lot, given the makeup of the neighborhood.
I’ll keep on researching and looking in Buffalo. If I find anything, I’ll let you know.
OK, my curiosity has been piqued regarding the Gold Theater on Sand Street in Buffalo. First, there is no Sand Street in Buffalo. Second, I have reviewed my considerable resources, and I can find no mention of the Gold Theater. However, none of this is to say that there wasn’t. Street names change, streets disappear, theaters change names, and theaters disappear.
A possibility though is Lackawanna NY, another city immediately south of Buffalo (one side of a street is Buffalo, across the street is Lackawanna). Lackawanna does have a Sand Street, I’m not familiar with it, it is located in what was a heavy industry area (some may argue that all of Lackawanna was heavy industry). I will take a ride by in the next couple of days and see what there is to see, photograph any possibilites, and ask around. I’ll get back to you.
