I wonder what happened to Mickey and Suzanne. I think Mickey managed Phipps after Promenade.

I get your sentiment but it should stay chopped up and play Jurassic Park 8 so that it can stay afloat with art movies too. There are lots of families in the area and it would be nice to avoid Phipps congestion to take the family out on movie night. I think the best marketing would be a mix. And better have a coffee bar for the youngsters.

Robin, Adam did not run the projectors. The people who ran the projectors were Mr. Mitcham, Dave, Mickey, Kris, and Doug (when he was not drooling over Laurie).

Four screens were better because there was so much wasted space, either too close or too far with two screens. I never liked movie “halls”. For some reason I want to say it had 3 screens at one time and I thought that was the best. Caligula played here, rated X, to much media fanfare. I saw Star Wars and Blue Lagoon here.

I think I remember the penthouse having a lower ceiling

Akers Mill had a very strange configuration with the bathrooms upstairs. Everybody was always asking where they were. They also did not keep toilet paper but some sort of small napkins to do yer wipin'. Plus the popcorn was never popped fresh but kept for days, I know I got popcorn duty often. The walls were metallic so acoustics were god awful. The concession stand being right in the middle in front of the entrance blocked the flow of traffic so crowd control was tough.

I saw Aliens 2 here. I got really drunk on 151 so the movie was not scary. It was the only time I saw a movie drunk because after that I wanted to enjoy movies more. This place was really classy and big. Such a loss but at the time downtown was not a place people frequented so there was not enough business to support it.

Yes, early 80’s summer of Flashdance, World According to Garp, and AC/DC movie.Larry hired me and let me lie about my age because I was too young. Crisp fired me because I could not work on Sundays because of school night so no love lost. Then went to work at Plitt Promenade with Mr. Mitcham and had the time of my life. I got to be the projectionist since they only had to keep one Union man for the area and he never came by so I ran them all as a teenager.

Mr. Crisp was my manager and Mr. Bailey was the assistant. The concession stand was around the column in the picture and the four theatres off to the sides two on each. Upstairs were the bathrooms and offices and the infamous popcorn room. The projectionist was Union and we never saw him.

Some of my best times too, I wonder what Jessica and Suzanne are doing now? I’d surely like to catch up…

I think the Buckhead Art Cinema at west paces ferry and Peachtree was there the longest? BTW, anyone remember the drive-in at the site of the Richway->Lindbergh Marta station?

There are enough clues spread on this web site for you to positively ascertain my identity :) Why not ask the bowler himself?

2001 was soooo….. boring, a real snoozer. How can you not like light sabers?

I saw Aliens here when I was in college at Georgia Tech in the mid-80’s so I guess I got to see this theater before it closed. I laughed all the way through the movie since my fraternity brothers and I were drinking 151 rum. Never watch a movie drunk, it really spoils it. This was a 70 MM theater with a HUGE curved screen, pretty awesome.

I saw Star Wars at this theater when I was eight. I lived in Pine Hills around the corner and was blown away. I also saw Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields here as a teenager and was blown away again, but in a different way! I still go here a lot because it does not have that mass market feel.

My favorite memory was watching the premiere of Revenge of the Jedi in the Penthouse with my girlfriend at the time Leslie M. We both worked for the Plitt Promenade. I think Mickey may have gotten transferred over here?

I worked as a doorman and perpetual popcorn popper for this theater which would be sold to customers days later. I moved on to Plitt Promenade, a much better management experience. The movie halls were long and narrow, very poor experience. This theater did not have much to offer except very attractive carpeting and their opening jingle (do dat do, do dat do, do dat do…) . I do remember watching Flashdance, AC/DC Back in Black, and The World According to Garp endlessly during that summer.

I wish only the best for foxy Kim and Mr. Bailey!

I worked at this cinema for several years along with Mr. Mitchum, Mickey & Suzanne, Doug & Laurie, Jessica (How’s Dagwood?, stop eating the candy!), Cheryl, and the beautiful Leslie M;> I can tell you anything you want to know!!!

We had a blast! What great memories. Bowling after the mid-night movies, Thursday previews, Cobb County Police Parties, The Verdict losing sound on opening night with only ten minutes left to go, counting cups, Galaga, Mr. M’s Wedding, and my special nacho cheese recipe.
Note: we had no cash registers for the concession stand!
