I was sad to see this theater close, it’s now a gym.
I remember seeing a movie there when I was about 17 (1996) and getting home only to notice my wallet missing. To me it was the end of the world because I lost my driver’s lic., some pictures and probably some other random crap. I called the theater to ask if any found it but sadly no. Convinced it was there I went back the next day and search the theater only to find it stuck in the fold of the seat. I was so happy!
This theater has been closed for about a year now as of Jan 09. It is currently a gym that I belong to. I saw movies here as a kid in high school 93 – 97. It wasn’t anything special and I think when the stadium style theaters starting opening this theater was forgotten. I remember it as a General Cinema before becoming a Trademark Cinema.
The Athens seems to be alive and well. Just picked up a flyer for events in Jan 09 and they are showing classic movies and hosting events. I live in the area and I’m going to try and check out a classic flick. Downtown Deland is a happening little place. Nice restaurants and bars. Apparently it used to be quite run down in the early 90’s so it’s nice to see come to life.
My boyfriend and I took a trip to see SW florida from the Orlando area and spend 2 nights in Clewiston. The theater inside was the strangest thing I think I’ve every seen. We walked up like half a flight of stairs to what I can only call a balcony with maybe about 40 – 50 seats. There was no way our screen had 176 seats in it.
When we sat down we were literary eye to eye with the screen and felt like we could reach out and touch it. Not sure what the other screen was like but this was strange. We saw Transformers so it wasn’t too long ago.
I remember when this was the Interstate 6 theater. My friends and I wanted to see an R rated movie but we were only 16. So we bought tickets for King Pin and sneaked into the R rated movie where we were promptly caught and thrown out. The upside was we got our money back.
The little mall this theater is in has undergone some major transformation. In the early 1990’s there was a Pharacare Drugstore were we bought candy to sneak in and tame but adult novelty store across the hall from the theater. Looking back on it I was quite the little troublemaker.
