First general release film was BLUE WATER, WHITE DEATH. The Cinerama Dome played Los Angeles County exclusive engagements until August 15, 1982. The last exclusive was ABEL GANCE’S NAPOLEON. We occassionally played an early release exclusive like EVITA. APOCALYPSE NOW which opened in August 1979 was reserved seat the first 4 weeks. Since the reopening of the Dome in March 2002 as part of ArcLight, every film, every day is reserved seat.

Yes, the audience will need to leave the theatre between shows so we can reset formats for the next show and give the crew opportunity to clean the theatre. Since all seats are reserved, there is no need to stand in a line since your chosen seat will be waiting for you. You might want to try our Cinerama inspired menu at the cafe or browse the gift shop for lots of Cinerama branded merchandise.

The Cinerama screen was removed in the early 1970’s. Not sure of the date. Clockwork Orange played here and it still had the curve at that time. In fact, it still had the CINERAMA name on the marquee in lights where the words PACIFIC are now.
The Dome was built in 16 weeks. Working double shifts.In fact, we will be playing a short on the building of the Dome where the sign on the construction site was changed every week,,,in 16 weeks,…in 15 weeks etc.
MAD WORLD had a 166 day shooting schedule so it was in production way before they broke ground on the Dome.

2001: A Space Odyssey (Not sure about Custer of The West…it did not play at the Dome.
Yes we will be playing the police calls at intermission.

How the West Was Won had its American premiere in Hollywood in February 1963. We had three Norelco AA 35/70 mm projectors in the center booth. Changed to two CenturyJJ projectors in late 1980’s

The water curtain is new to the 2002 refurbishing. Before, that area was inside the brick wall surrounding the building, hiding trash receptacles and HVAC.

Grimm, and How The West Was Won, and Act 2 of Seven Wonders Of The World will be shown in 3 strip Cinerama. (Act 2 as digital scanning will not be completed.) Cinerama Holiday and South Seas Adventure are new digital prints from the original negatives…stunningly beautiful. Russian Adventure, Golden Head, and Holiday in Spain, digital from 65mm ele ments, 2001 in 2K digital, Mad World in 70mm Ultra Panavision and IN THE PICTURE, the first new film photographed in Cinerama in 50 years is in 3 strip.
Yes, I would like to see everything in its original formats but I believe that in more important to show everything listed as this is the 60th Anniversary of the process.

I just ran a little of BEN HUR. Warners has done an excellent job in restoring the original Camera 65 (ultra-Panavision) image. The TI chip has information edge to edge, but there are black bars at the top and bottom of the regular “scope” image to give it more width. You will see a little more information than you saw at the Dome in 70mm as that was a spherical print with 220: x 1 aspect ratio.

In the Cinerama Dome were use five JBL 4632 three-way ScreenArray speakers for L-XL-C-XR-R behind the screen plus 6 JBL dual 4642A subwoofers. In the auditorium, we have 48, JBL 4630 surrounds We use QSC amplifiers, Dolby CP650 processor for standard presentations and a modified CP200 for magnetic 7 channel playback for Cinerama. We can also play 35mm and 70mm DTS, and SDDS 8 channel. projection on Kinoton EP75 for 35/70mm, 3-Century Cinerama projectors and 2 Christie Solaria 4230, 4K digital projectors
The 4k images will be the same size and aspect ratio as if we were playing film. When we played Ben HUR in 70mm in the 1990', it was not an ultra-panavision print. We should have the DCP on Wednesday so I will comment then.
The Christie Solaria does not compensate for the deeply curved screen.
We are still working on the schedule for the September Cinerama event. At this time, Brothers Grimm looks doubtful as the print that played in Bradford last week has some problems.
And finally Seattle. They were able to borrow archival 70mm prints because they have 2 70mm projectors and can do changeovers. We only have one in the Dome now. Also, Paul Allen has paid to strike new prints for Seattle. Hope that answers your questions.

Pacific’s Commerce Theatre opened as a fourplex on March 23, 1980. It was remodelled and expanded to a sevenplex opening on April 26, 1991. Today it is a 14 plex operated by Regency Theatres. The Commerce was the first new multiplex theatre designed and built in the United States to serve the Hispanic Community.
It is interesting to see the rather short engagements on LOA when you compare them to other reserved seat engagements around the same time.
