Opened on 26 March 1970, the Westwood was the last true movie house in Acadiana. The Westwood served “Cajun Country” for 34 years before finally succumbing to the advances of the state of the art multiplexes that have taken the U.S. by storm. It’s last show, “The Secret Window,” starring Johnny Depp played on 15 April 2004. Among other special events, the Westwood was home to the world premiere of the Powers Booth film Southern Comfort as well as regional premieres of “Drowning Pool”, “Charlie’s War”, and most recently “The Passion of the Christ”. A truly remarkable theatre many of its employees called a home away from home (such as myself). And don’t forget the Westwood ghost that had a peculiar habit of turning lights on and moving around out of the corner of your eye in the shadows.
