From the article pictures the marquee looks very similar to the Fox - Wichita, KS. It raised and lowered for changing. This was a National General later aquired by Mann.
I always thought it was such an unique theatre being underground the way it was. But then that is what New York City is all about so it fit in quite well!!
The Mall Cinema Wichita, Kansas and the Century 21 (Single screen) Springfield Missouri were identical in design. Just one auditorium faced east while the other faced west. Both built by National General and later Mann ultimately by Dickinson.
A similar AAT theatre was built in the Sunset Plaza, Salina, KS. It featured Cinemacannica projectors. My best guess is that they were identical in design.
This theatre is scheduled to be closed and is not a part of the sale of Warren Theatres to Regal. http://www.kansas.com/news/business/biz-columns-blogs/carrie-rengers/article151485057.html
DIckinson took over the operations of this theatre, the Fairlawn Twin, Topeka, KS as well as the Mid-State Twin, Salina, Ks, all Jerry Lewis. The Biscayne and Fairlawn were already in operation, the Mid-State had not yet opened. All three theatres were in a common ownership mall which may have played a part in why Dickinson was the operator who acquired the theaters.
This theatre is currently undergoing a complete renovation including leather recliner seating. The theatre probably had not been upgraded since its opening.

The roll up doors were added since my last visit several years ago. Do not know the status of things currently.
If one knows what they are looking for the street sign is still there. (I changed it on more than one occasion.)

The owner you are referring to was Sterling Bagby.
AMC has acquired this theatre and doing a complete remodel, it is slated to re-open in mid-July.
Chill Wills must have had a contact with National General for theatre openings. He also was at the opening for the Fox Garvey in Wichita, KS.

This is similar in deisgn to the Northrock 6 in Wichita, KS, which closed many years ago. From the pictures this theatre looks smaller.
