Undoubtedly one of the areas most well run and comfortable neighborhood theaters. It offers wine, pizza and other upscale items and couch seating. Like sitting in your living room. No chance of closing or not running first run movies anymore.
I now live one and a half blocks from the Times and can see it’s Marquee lights from my front window. I am happy to say it has been remodeled and is showing first run films again. The owner has also remodeled his two other theaters the Rosebud in Wauwatosa and the Avalon on the south side and they are also showing first run films again. All three are small and very comfortable.
This was the upscale theater of my youth. I lived on 24th and Lloyd and went to the Rainbow, Climax, Savoy/Oasis as a rule which showed either cheap, children, second run movies (saw a lot of 50s monster/sci fi movies on Sundays at the Rainbow) But if I wanted to see Ben Hur or The Ten Commandments I had to walk thirteen blocks to the Uptown and thirteen back (these were the days when parents didn’t chauffeur their kids everywhere) but it was usually worth it.
The Kino Theater that was asked about was a genuine german language movie house. I was born to german grandparents and taught German at an early age and since I lived in the neighborhood with them they would take me there every other week. It was very small and cozy. I wish I could describe it further but I was a small boy at the time.
The Climax which was obviously named for the height of the excitement before the end of the movie was my childhood playhouse. I lived on 24th and Lloyd and every Sunday we would go to a show which often featured a double header, cartoon, three stooges short and toy on the way out all for 25 cents. It was packed but how can you make money at 25 cents a head.
