Aside from all the technical jargon, I saw “The Doors” movie at the Ziegfeld in NYC and it was an experience of a lifetime. It seemed a lot bigger than the Cinema 150 in Syosset. That 70mm screen looked like it was a city block long. Very impressive. Great place to see a movie. Make that, the “only” place to see a movie.
We from the “T” section of Levit houses used to go to the midnight shows back in the late 70’s. We always called it The Wantagh Cinema. Cinema Wantagh sounded odd I guess. But we’d walk the 2 mile stretch down Wantagh Ave on weekend nights when I was in high school (MacArthur) to see Yessongs and Song Remains the Same. I can still see Steve Howe performing “The Clap"
Here is an ad for that show. View link
Sure would liked to have seen Nana there. Yentyl? The best place for that piece of crap was a theater where I wasn’t. The UA Syosset Cinema 150 as we called it was awesome. It was the last of the big screens on LI in the 80’s and early 90’s, I remember living in Riverhead, and telling my girlfriend, it’s worth the trip. Having been from Nassau County originally I was hip to it. Another map question. How come the Seaford/Oyster Bay’s final exit is Wantagh? I remember a campaign when it was constructed, where Wantagh protested. It was supposed to connect from Wantagh Parkway (Jones Beach) to Oyster Bay or Bayville, and a Ferry to Conn. was proposed from there. That would’ve been a cool trip. Too bad politics got in the way.
To chelydra; I think you might be confusing the Drive-In which was right at the corner of Chapel Lane and Route 25.
I do however remember the original Greenport Theater. My Grandmother had a summer home on Ram Island, Shelter Island, and we’d drive to the Ferry and park, and go across on foot. She’d treat us to a movie and dinner at Mitchell’s. Anyone remember Mitchell’s? Back then it was a big screen theater. Late 60’s Early 70’s.
View link has a picture of The Wantagh Movie Theater as we called it. I was born in 61, and lived in the “T” section across from Cherrywood Shopping Center which was adjacent to it. I remember seeing Beneath The Planet of the Apes" in fact all but the First. My Mother thought I was too young. Sure whipping me with a belt bare assed was ok, but Planet of The Apes was going to screw me up…lol. I also remember seing Live And Let Die There, and Woody Allens Sleeper. The Wantagh Cinema down towards Park Ave, used to show cool Midnight Shows on Fri and Sat nites like Yessongs and Gimme Shelter. Back in the 70’s/
