The film was called “Bicycle Thief” in the US and Canada, the original distributor’s release title. The original Italian title is plural, “Ladri di biciclette”. It’s plural in Britain and in some re-release and retrospective situations in the US. No such issue in France where the singular was always used, “Le Voleur…” I prefer “Bicycle Thief,” because that is what I grew up with in the US. That is also how Martin Scorsese referred to it as in his “My Voyage to Italy” documentary on post-war Italian movies.
