Was the building actually torn down? There is a building the size of a theatre that sits unused and empty behind the building that has an old “KCK Enterprises” sign on it. It looks like they demolished the front of the building (lobby, entrance, etc.), but left the auditorium and stage area still standing.

Hugger1 commented about Mayfair Theatre on Sep 15, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Looks like the Mayfair is closing, probably at the end of November. The theatre needs a major infusion of cash for building repairs and the owner isn’t willing to do them.

Agreed. I think he forgot to mention the white stretch limo as well.

What do you mean “dressed formally”? White tie? Black tie? Jackets & ties?

Hugger1 commented about Cineplex fires a great salvo; finally some innovation on Jun 12, 2006 at 5:13 am

Cineplex is not the first to do this type of advertising. Famous Players (who Cineplex recently bought) did this same ad with the same tag line in the mid 90’s.

The theatres were known as Elgin 1 and Elgin 2, or in earlier times Elgin and Little Elgin.

One of the classiest places around in it’s day, along with the Capital.

Hugger1 commented about Phoenix Theatre on Mar 29, 2006 at 5:08 am

This movie house had a few names in it’s existence; The Rialto (we use to call it the Rat Hole, no explanation needed) being one and the Phoenix Theatre being another. During it’s days I attended as a kid we could see 3 top rate movies for 35 cents.

Hugger1 commented about Rideau Theatre on Mar 28, 2006 at 10:14 am

It was too big a theatre for it’s location. Land was too expensive and it wasn’t pulling in the crowds. In it’s later stages it was showing second runs of movies. In the end they closed the balconey.

NO………….the old theatre building was torn down and the space is still empty. The STAPLES building is the old Colonial Furniture location.

I currently live in Ottawa. The “PHOENIX” has been gone since the early 1990’s. The location is at 403 BANK STREET (between Waverley and Frank Street). The building is now owned and operated by STAPLES / Business Depot since about 1995.
