Market Theatre
This January 1921 view shows the layout of the Market Theatre. There is a deep, rectangular canopy covering the pavement at the archway through the public house, with two posts at the kerb edge. Access was in the open air behind the pub to the foyer of the theatre.
Three years later, on 19 April 1924, the building was gutted by fire, except for the foyer and manager’s office.
The auditorium in the photo was 61ft long by 38.5ft wide and seated 650, with some in a balcony.
