The façade of the Grand from a local newspaper article on Saturday 16 September 1922. The cinema opened on Monday 18 September 1922. The site had been a billiards hall and shops. A newspaper report in August 1922 referred to it being built ‘over the billiards hall’ and demolishing some ‘shop’ properties on St James' St.
