Strangely, in this photo someone has blurred the titles of the two feature films in the display over the entrance. However the nearer looks like “Devil’s Hairpin” with “VistaVision” beneath the title. That film was released in 1957. Leslie Halliwell (son of Bolton) in his famous Film Guide doesn’t give the film even one star.

This 1957 shot does, indeed, show the entrance display advertising “The Devil’s Hairpin,” double featured with “Short Cut to Hell.” Both of these were essentially low budget, demonstration productions for Paramount’s VistaVision process. Otherwise known as Lazy 8, this involved the temporary installation of projectors through which the 35mm film ran horizontally. This gave a bigger aspect ratio and better definition, without the need of anamorphic lenses. Though short-lived, this process paved the way for later 70mm productions, culminating in the IMAX process.
