Hey Spok. I’ve read your memories of the Berkeley Cinema and I’ve enjoyed them. As a bank messenger back in the 1970’s, I used to pass this theatre all the time. I wish I had made the effort to see a movie or two there.
I remember the summer of 1978 as the summer that “Animal House” came out. I remember seeing it at this theatre and if we had a slow summer night with nothing to do, we would go back to this theatre and see Animal House again.
I enjoyed this theatre and I saw many movies here. I loved the seats and the big screen. I miss this theatre.
I remember this theatre as a revival theatre back in the mid and late 70’s and I used to drive in from New Jersey to see movies her. I remember seeing Gone With The Wind, Going My Way and several Marx Brothers movies. I miss this theatre very much.
Chuck – Do you have first hand knowledge of a theatre at 550 Bloomfield Ave called the Century? My memory goes back about 50 years and I don’t remember a theatre called the Century.
I remember seeing The Godfather, Gone With The Wind & Saturday Night Fever for the first time at the movie theatre. I also remember going to see a Judd Nelson movie back in the mid to late 1980’s and sitting in the movie theatre by myself. The theatre was already sub-divided at this point. It saddens me to think that the theatre was eventually demolished. I wish the powers that be at the time had the forsight to appreciate the theatre and restore it to it’s former glory.
This was a enjoyable neighborhood theatre. Growing up in Glen Ridge and currently living in Montclair – I saw many a movie here at the Verona Theatre. I miss it as well.

It’s been said that Burns and Allen made their first performance in vaudeville at this theatre.

I seem to recall seeing my first movie at this theatre. My older sister took me to see Pinnochio when I was about 5. This would have been about 1962
