Haha I will back Chris up on all of his criticisms of this place. I ventured here exactly once back in the early 2000s, and that was enough for me. I’ve literally been in living rooms with more space and better setups than what the UV3 was sporting. And holy mother of god, the floors… how they could get so sticky, I’ll (thankfully) never know.
It’s unfortunate that AFAIK, the redeveloped UV currently doesn’t include a theater in its plans.
It’s no Arclight, but the theater is passable. Glad they’ve kept the art house focus from when it was a 4 screen hole-in-the-wall in the corner of the mall.
I will say that the service is excellent. There was an online screw up and my tickets weren’t in the system, even though I was charged for them. I bought an extra pair at the kiosk because we were already there and the movie was about to start. (Concierge line was too long to bother with.) I sent them an email about it the next day, assuming that they’d just shrug, but was promptly refunded for the missing tickets.
Came here right when they were doing extensive renovations around 2001. Repair-work and scaffoldings were everywhere, but the theater was still gorgeous.
I saw Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and during the follow-the-boucing-ball scene, EVERYONE in the audience sang along to the lyrics at full pitch. Coolest cinematic/theatrical experience to date.
I used to come here towards the end of it’s run, when it was an art house theater. It was the only cinema in the area showing the films I wanted to see, so it quickly became a favorite of mine.
Had the opportunity to watch movies on both of the screens. The 2nd floor(?) theater had stadium seating, which was a rarity even in the late 90s.
I recall them scoring one last coup with The Blair Witch Project — I drove past the theater and saw a line of people queued down the block for that one. By then, evening showings had about 50 people at most, with matinees pulling in maybe 20.
Great memories of this place. I was very sad when I heard that it had closed. I suppose the Avon has now succeeded it in spirit, though I haven’t had a chance to check it out post-renovations.
Sounds like this theater will be around until their lease expires in 2014. What a waste of space. Would be great to have an Arclight and a new arthouse theater on the promenade, instead of 3 shoddy multiplexes.
Sadly both buildings have been completely gutted by whomever the current owner is.
The space is currently being used as an illegal nightclub. Wish I was kidding…
