I live on 64th St. & First Ave. & miss the old 68th St. Playhouse. I saw “Gods Must Be Crazy” & “Return of Martin Guerre” there in the 80’s among other things. I think the last thing I saw there was “Dangerous Liasons” in the 90’s which I remember seeing from the balcony. I’m a theater nut & love shared cultural experiences even if it is alongside strangers. It was a truly unique time that I’m glad I had the opportunity to experience before video began keeping most people home for their film experiences.

I miss the old Beekman. I have lived nearby for over 30 yrs. & it was always a nice surprise to see it utilized for all kind of premieres since it was such a beautiful showcase theater. The owner would speak before screenings to chastise those who had maybe brought in their own soda or snacks. One little thing I noticed is that even up to the end, their presentation of movie posters would always feature that little extra…cutting away part & raising it with foam core board so as to create depth & enhanced visual interest. Does any theater care enough to do that kind of thing anymore?

I have lived on 64th between First & York for over 30 yrs now & fondly remember Maxwells Plum esp. since to go anywhere other than the E River, I have to constantly pass this corner. It was a 2 story Blockbuster at one time. I always thought that the space occupied by Little Ricky’s today (before that a drug store & before that a small disco/club) may have been part of the theatre? Glad Mr. Laffs was mentioned because the area used to have more comedy clubs other than the areas still lasting ‘Dangerfields’ I barely remember another comedy club nearby called “Who’s On First.” The area still has the Clearview Cinemas on 62nd btwn First & York but has seen it’s Second Ave. theaters closing.
