The Thebarton Theatre has a rich history dating back to 1928 when it was built as a cinema and live performance venue. During its early years, the theatre hosted various events, including film screenings, vaudeville shows, and concerts.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the Thebarton Theatre became a popular live music venue, hosting local, national, and international acts including Cold Chisel’s farewell concert in 1983, Midnight Oil’s ‘Species Deceases’ tour in 1985, INXS’s ‘Kick’ tour in 1987, Paul Kelly’s “So Much Water So Close to Home” tour in 1989 and Nirvana in 1992.
Since 2000, Thebarton Theatre has continued to host live music events, showcasing a diverse range of acts. In 2010, Thebarton Theatre underwent significant restoration and renovation works, ensuring the venue’s continued viability as a live music and performance space.
