Cinerama 59-61 Courtenay Place, Wellington NZ
PHOTO - 1978 Photographer Charles J Fearnley - Wellington City Libraries
Description The Cinerama was built 1933 - 34 as the State Theatre. It was altered in 1966 to enable the screening of films using the wide-format ‘Cinerama’ process and changed its name to match that of the format. The curved Cinerama screen was replaced with a ‘normal’ wide-format flat screen in 1972 to enable the screening of 70mm wide format films.
This was the largest conventional cinema screen ever erected in Wellington, exceeding even that of the Embassy Theatre. The Cinerama closed and was demolished in 1987.
