1953 Hoyts install CinemaScope.

On Tues Dec 15, 1953 Hoyts closed the Regent theatre for one day in order to install a giant rig for the presentation of The Robe in CinemaScope the following night.
The screen measured 54 ft wide by 21 ft high with an approx 5 ft curve.
The screen measured 54 ft wide by 21 ft. high with an approx 5 ft curve. approximately the same proportions as the eye’s field of vision. The cost was £20,000.
CinemaScope Installation
The technical details of the Regent installation - The new giant CinemaScope screen was installed over the orchestra pit, stretching across the face of the existing proscenium for the presentation of “THE ROBE” – The Wurlitzer organ was re-sited off its hoist and located in the left hand proscenium box.

The screen stayed in front of the proscenium until CAROUSEL commenced on (June 28th 1956) then it was moved back in a reduced size inside the proscenium, and behind the existing curtains –
